This is a secret location only locals know. It shows a glimpse of the American past and the Detroid car manufacturing. It is called Catstair Canyon “Detroit Riprap” and can be found here on the map if you are in the area. It is close to the Toadstool Hoodoos also found on the Sunday.ART website here. So when you are in the area a hidden gem to visit.
So what is it? Not directly what you might think… these are not cars involved in accidents. Well some perhaps just not all. These are cars produced in the early days in Detroit and after years of use where ready to be used for scraps. In the USA are miles and miles of road that require to be more solid underneath to have a higher base for the road to be placed on. The perfect combination with waste left and stabilize road base constructions. An early days solution to a problem. Usually this ‘filling’ is hidden far under the roads and at this is a location it is visible. You can see the stacking of the cars and the building of the road on top of it. On top of the photo where you see the hill and the metal horizontal bar. That is the road where you drive on. And so far it is holding ever since.
Finding the parking is right before the bend from the West side of the road before the object itself. It is a little hit and miss exit so turning at some point is required when you are too late.
