Imagine you are going to Maui, Hawaii, sun, beaches and a warm tropical climate. Packing a winter hat and gloves next to your sunscreen and shorts would be the last on the list. However, there is a reason to pack it, just in case.

On the day of the planned event for an ‘American’ hike to the highest mountain on Maui, Haleakalā. Getting ready at 3 am to take a seat in a small fully ice cold airconditioned bus for a 3 hours long journey into the darkness. That explains the gloves and hat? almost 😉 After sitting on the bus reaching it’s final destination it is just before sunrise at the horizon.

At the top of the mighty Haleakalā, at 3.055 meters above sea level the temperatures dropped to 5 degrees Celsius. Here I was glad to have packed the gloves and the hat #Lifesaver. And what about that ‘American’ hike? well that is just getting in the bus to the top of the mountain and being dropped at the visitor centre to walk a 50meter to the edge. Very convenient.

At the edge you can oversee the whole island. Brilliant and breath-taking scenery. On a lucky day, like that day, you are above the clouds creating a surreal like film atmosphere. The clouds move slowly over the mountains down into the valley. This images shows exactly that moment. Enjoy your inner peace when you are looking…
